About this book
My journey with programming began in 1986. I have witnessed the transition from environments constrained by memory and tools to distributed systems, cloud platforms, and artificial intelligence. Across every technological wave, one lesson has remained constant: languages and tools matter, but they do not, by themselves, create an engineer or a robust system.
This book presents a practical path for students and practitioners. It begins with computers, data, operating systems, networks, and programming
languages; moves to problem discovery, requirements, models, and boundaries; and then develops the disciplines of clean code, verification,
security, delivery, observation, and maintenance. The objective is not to memorize the names of patterns. It is to develop the ability to make sound
decisions under real constraints.
I consider software engineering one of the most consequential disciplines in computing. Data platforms and artificial-intelligence models do not become safe and useful products without engineers who control data, contracts, tests, delivery, monitoring, and change. For that reason, the final chapter connects software engineering directly to modern data and AI systems.
